Cracker Barrel Accused of Discrimination Against Chris Rock''s Mother

advertisement

Officials for the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in South Carolina are blaming a shift change for the long wait experienced last May by Rose Rock, the mother of actor/comedian Chris Rock.

The company sent representatives to a news conference held Wednesday outside of the Murrells Inlet restaurant, where Rock and her 21-year-old daughter, Andi Rock, say they were the victims of racial discrimination after waiting over 30 minutes for attention as other people were being serve......

Wynne, vice president of corporate affairs for Cracker Barrel, said the incident is under investigation.

....Rock, meanwhile, said she and her daughter sat for 30 minutes before noticing other people receiving iced tea and menus. A hostess ignored her, and the manager did not tell any servers to apologize, Rock said.

"It's hard to miss two black people in a sea of white folks," Rock said. "We stick out."

....As previously reported, Cracker Barrel has had a history of lawsuits and complaints over refusing to serve black customers, discriminating against minority workers and firing gay employees.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It probably isn't going to stop, it will just get more and more subtle.

When I lived in Durham, NC, I noticed a lot of subtle, de facto segregation. When I first looked for a supermarket, I went into a Kroger. I couldn't help but notice that the supermarket was dominated by black people. Right across the street was a "Harris Teeter" (almost as silly a name as piggly wiggly) supermarket, which I noticed was greatly dominated by white people when I visited. Even the foodstuffs seemed to appeal to stereotypes.

The area had a lot of similar examples- there was a "white" mall (where they had "white" shops, it was newer) and a "black" mall (which was smaller, pretty rickety looking, and had a lot of "black" shops). It was the first time I'd ever really noticed the products you choose to sell or not sell can cater to or leave out a specific customer.

It was subtle, but still disturbing to me. Other people have told me it is like that in many place across the south. It was one of the main reasons I moved back to California.

Ever eaten at a Cracker Barrel? I have and I has also sat and waited for a long period. I once got up and left after 30 minutes; and I'm white. It's called crappy service! Every single time something negative happens to a black person doesn't mean that it's intentional discrimination. In order to get beyond racism, we have to stop looking for it in every single action, word, phrase, etc.

It may not have been because of her race. They probably knew she was Chris Rock's mom. ;-)

Since they have a history of problems like this, you'd think they'd be a little more careful.

This sounds like a bunch of BS to me. This same thing has happened to me at a Perkins. It never occurred to me that I was being discriminated against, but then why should it. I'm a white man.

You were not served while other people who were not white were served and Perkins has a history of discrimination against White People?

Funny I havent heard about Perkins history of discrimination, then again are you sure it was the "same thing."

You might be right, but dont try to pretend its exactly the "same thing." There is sometimes discrimination against white men, but do you really believe that it happens exactly the same amount?

I'm not saying that I was discriminated against. In fact, the reason I wasn't served was because the waitress thought I was waiting for someone.

According to the details of the story, I don't see any indication that it was anything other than a mistake. @!$%# happens man. I don't see the point of jumping to the conclusion that you are being discriminated against just because you find yourself in an unfavorable situation.

but then why should it. I'm a white man.

I expect it depends on where you are. I pass for white, although I don't really consider myself white. . .long story. I have been in places were I either had to wait while others of the other race/ethnicity were served or, in one case, after 45 minutes we just left. It was a little taco place near where I lived, on the way to the bus stop, in Denver, CO. I tried several times to order something there and could never get helped.

OTOH, the Chinese restaurant we ordered from while we lived in Aurora, CO, sent us all kinds of cool extras the last time we ordered. Man, I STILL miss their wonton soup. :)

And I've also been the "white" person who got waited on/got chosen over blacks and Hispanics.
Bottom line, I guess, bigotry is not a white only disease and blacks aren't the only ones who suffer.

All I can say is that I get plenty of crappy service wherever I go. Maybe I should start paying attention to the race of those who give me crappy service. It could very well be that I get crappy service because half of the people in my community are not caucasion.

Well, this company may have a bad track record and maybe these folks were discriminated against (it doesn't sound like it from the article, however). To me, this sounds more like an aggravated sense of entitlement than discrimination.

A note to celebrities (and their families): "normal" people have to wait for service sometimes -- even stand in line! The world doesn't actually revolve around you, despite what your agent and publicist tells you, and what you tell yourself. Believe it or not, being a celebrity doesn't make you a better person than anyone else.

That's certainly true, but if I had to wait an hour to get noticed, I'd be pretty upset as well. Especially in a Cracker Barrel.

Granted. it sucks having wait, especially for sub-par food and bad service. But that doesn't make it discrimination. If this turns out to be nothing, I'd like to see the city sue them for a frivolous lawsuit.

I'm not a lawyer (thank god), so I don't know what legally defines discrimination or what merits that label. I do, however, read the papers and online and see a general sense of entitlement, especially among celebrities. I didn't say this *wasn't* discrimination -- I don't know the facts and admit that. But it sure sounds like someone was pissed they had to wait for service. That alone, I'm pretty sure, isn't discrimination, that's bad service.

Honestly, I don't know how things work on the coast, but here in Ohio it takes an hour for anything to get done at Cracker Barrel, and I think I know why: elderly couples are their primary patrons, and they flock to CB in droves.

My ex-boyfriend used to describe the lengthy descriptions his customers at Bob Evan's would give while ordering eggs a certain way, or how they would tell him all about how they have to get home in time for their "stories."

(Note: this comment is anecdotal, and is not intended to offend.)

well to establish a baseline of thinking since none of us were there... we all would have a different view of what would be considered discrimination...

not saying this was their scenario, i propose this... if you, me, or anyone is in a place of business and it could reasonably be considered our turn to be our turn to be served, and are repeatedly overlooked, disregarded and passed over, and can presume that we have been noticed and accounted for but not served... that would qualify as discrimination of some sort... what kind? depends...

for example, a lone hispanic couple sitting in a country club restaurant filled with virtually all caucasian waiting politely to be served and begin to notice those that arrived, were seated, and served prior to themselves and use good ole' country common sense and suspect they may be have been discriminated against... if it were two women at at typically "men only" golf club, waiting to be assigned a tee time... etc. etc... for those that have never experienced discrimination, it happens to all races, even white people... visit the "hood"... and see how quick it happens... so its just ludicrous to insinuate that it doesn't .... and honestly, everyone probably has done it... it starts early even as children... i can remember me and my brothers putting handwritten signs on our room door "No Girls Allowed" (oh how dumb little boys can be... trust me that wouldn't be on my bedroom door now)...

:)

I used to think Cracker Barrel was the cheese rectangles in the grocery store and could never understand why anyone would make a restaurant out of that... but then someone took me to the actual restaurant.

I still don't get the point of the place. Part gift shop, part roadside eatery? Whatever. We got there early and sat right down but shortly after that people were literally lined up around the building. Apparently how soon you get a table depends a lot on when you get there. Too late and it's too bad.

Anyway, I had a somewhat related experience at my doctor's office recently. The office waiting area was full of people when I arrived. Signed in, sat down, and was called immediately. As the only white person there, I got a room full of very angry looks. I later asked the nurse if perhaps someone else should get seen first -I had just arrived after all- but she said no, all of the other people were new patients who had to fill out insurance paperwork and none of them were actually done. As an existing patient, my information and paperwork was already on file and I waltzed right in.

So it LOOKED like racism and preferential treatment for the whitey, but it wasn't.

We will never know if this was discrimination or not since that ugly character trait lives in the heart and mind. Could have been though.

Comments about bad service in general are right on. There are too many potential customers for many businesses to worry about providing good service to any one of us.

Took my family into a tourist restaurant in St. George Utah about 15 years ago and had the best service that we have ever had. The waitress was a local college student paying her way through school. Between the first "hello" and taking our order, this 19 - 20 yo had established a personal rapport with each member of my family. She was able to "read" each of us and to play to each of us on a personal level. Even her thinly disguised flirty way she had for me and my two sons didn't bother my wife, who wanted to adopt her before the meal was over! This young lady was pursuing a degree in marketing. I told her that someday, she would own whatever marketing company that she worked for. I gave her the largest tip that has ever left my wallet so her style and attitude paid off. I have looked for her in every restaurant since - to no avail: I guess she went into marketing....*sigh*

For any man that wants good customer service, try a Victoria's Secret a few weeks before Christmas.

I know what good customer service looks like and I miss it more than often that I receive it. Probably a remark on our changing society and times.
