Social Dancing Banned In New York
Appeals Court Rules Ban Is Constitutional

....Should you find yourself in a bar in New York City, and the music playing makes you want to get up and dance, please resist the urge... A state court on Thursday upheld the city's Prohibition-era law that bans social dancing in bars, restaurants and certain clubs... Those who like to get up and boogie sued, arguing the law illegally infringes on their right of free expression. The city's Cabaret Law, which was enacted 80 years ago, bans social dancing in all but specially licensed venues....

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I believe we go way too far sometimes. Follow the money and we'd likely find the real reason for enforcement of this old law.

In my experience, though, this law isn't that stricly enforced. I think most cops know they have better things to do.

It came to be enforced again under Guiliani. He made quite a policy of enforcing lots of really stupid laws in order to promote "respect for the law" or something. Oh, and to increase revenue through fines. Other than that, there's really no reason for all of this.

while I agree this law is asinine - I think, perhaps, you are being to cynical in your views on why it is being enforced.

it is a law, a stupid one, but it is a law and it isn't up to the police or DA to determine what laws should or should not be enforced - that is for the courts and legislature to decide. Suing the city about this law wasn't the right way to go about affecting change. They should start by petitioning to get the law repealed.
