London's Science Museum canceled a Friday talk by Nobel Prize-winning geneticist James Watson after the co-discoverer of DNA's structure told a newspaper that Africans and Europeans had different levels of intelligence.
James Watson provoked widespread outrage with his comments to The Sunday Times, which quoted the 79-year-old American as saying he was "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really."
He told the paper he hoped that everyone was equal, but added: "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true."
The comments drew condemnation from British lawmakers, scientists, and civil rights campaigners. On Wednesday The Independent newspaper put Watson on its front page, against the words: "Africans are less intelligent than Westerners, says DNA pioneer."
He just proved his theory is not true with this ignorant assertion.
This is not the first time Watson's speaking engagements have caused a stir.
The Independent catalogued a series of controversial statements from Watson, including one in which he reportedly suggested women should have the right to have abortions if tests could determine their children would be homosexual.
In 2000 Watson shocked an audience at the University of California, Berkeley, when he advanced a theory about a link between skin color and sex drive... "That's why you have Latin lovers," ...
While I don't agree with his comments, I find it kind of "funny" that, had he said "black people are the best athletes," nobody would be calling him a racist, despite the fact that he'd be "insulting" every other race.
Are you kidding me?
That's essentially what Rush Limbaugh got in trouble for saying.
And that is racist as well. And it should be insulting to every other race, definitely not funny.
Actually, RL said that the media wants a black QB/Coach to do well in the NFL and that McNabb got more credit for the team's success than he deserved... debatable, yes, but I wouldn't call it "racist."
Personally I think Rush is a racist, but I agree that those particular comments he made were debatable.
But back to your original comment.
I find it kind of "funny" that, had he said "black people are the best athletes," nobody would be calling him a racist
That would certainly be insulting to blacks. It's a generalization just like the rest.
Richard Pryor used to say this joke on stage, about white generalizations about blacks. In summary, he advising whites if you gonna believe all the watermelon, chicken and other generalizations don't just believe some of them, believe all of them, especially the one about the huge member.
It's just wrong to generalize any group of people positive or negative.
I agree that it is wrong, but what I'm saying is that the media would not have made a big fuss about a comment that is considered "good" about black people. (Again, despite the fact that it is racist towards all other races.)
Honestly, 90% (probably more) of the "racist comments" I hear are aimed at black people. I almost never hear any other group being portrayed as a victim of racism in the media. (And no, I am not going to walk into the minefield that is the war in order to discuss the other ten, or so, percent.) :)
the media would not have made a big fuss
So your issue is with the media?
Then, I'd say I would disagree with your gross mis-estimate of 90%. I think it's skewed greatly for at least one reason: it's called the "race card" and racism when it's blacks, but called "anti-semetic" when it's relative to Jews and other terms for other races.
Well, while I don't live in a "huge" media city such as New York, (I live in Boston) I am no stranger to the media's ability to throw around the race card stories. (As well, to a lesser extent, as their ability to throw around the anti-semitic story, from time to time.)
But, in my experience, 90% of the racially charged stories are, indeed, concerning black people. Maybe this has to do with where I live, but I rarely hear anything on the news about Asians, Hispanics or white people being discriminated against.
And on the few occasions when there is a story regarding one of these races, (or any of the other races I did not list) the story has always been slipped in between two "more important" (not my words, for the record) stories.
Also, what are some of these other terms you are eluding to? I can't think of any besides "bigot."
Guess it doesn't make the papers often, but here on the vine, the hispanics and the asians make it well known that this is an issue for them as well.
And there are many other terms, but specifically was referencing the example that when a Jewish person is discriminated against, the headline doesn't read racist, rather describes the accused as anti-semetic. And I would certainly agree that cases of discrimination that make the news usually do often refer to African Americans.
Now this could be one of a few reasons. First, looking at race in America, as I recall African Americans were the only ones in the US held in slavery for hundreds of years and regarded as not even as humans. Second, it was less than 50 years ago in the same US, African Americans could not even use the same restrooms as whites, look at white people in the eyes and similar actions that relegated them as second class citizens. Many of the same institutions, government agencies and corporations that held those beliefs are still in existence. It is only expected that those same philosophies have lingered as well. That's why it's called institutional racism. See, there is no supreme white man somewhere who instructs whites in America to discriminate against African Americans, hispanics, Jews, etc, it is just understood that this is the way it is done. Case in point, mortgages: It is a fact that African Americans, regardless of credit, income, and all other factors receive higher interest rates for loans than whites in similar scenarios. Why?
Or what a strange coincidence, I guess, right.
We don't even have to use African Americans, but consider that Jews have been persecuted and discriminated against for many centuries. It should not surprise anyone when there is a claim of anti-semetism or racism against Jews.
What ignoramus would think that Native Americans are fudging the truth if they claim discrimination or racism in America? The nerve... Based on the history of the accused the default assumption should be one of belief, if there's any assumption at all.
The foundation of our country is one of racism and discrimination. That's not a fault but a fact. The fault is in not acknowledging that this is the case.
I am Native American and while I have been discriminated against, I don't make a huge deal about it. The way I see it is: people, as a whole, take time to change. Sure, by pulling a single person to the side I may be able to clue them in to their ignorance, (and in the past, I have) but, I have no control over the media.
So, while I agree with you that much of this country still harbors some form of racism and/or discrimination towards others, I maintain my earlier sentiment regarding the media.
And if he had you or he had said "blacks in America" are the best athletes, while being a generalization, could be true. The white racist power structure from yester-year bred slaves like dogs, aiming for the best breeds and stocks based on their physical attributes. Biology 101.
But to claim Africans as a whole are less intelligent than Europeans and Americans, that's just ignorant.
Hi News Guro??, and Nwesvine,
Looks like you like to delete the stuff here that speaks the truth about the blacks,
Looks like you lost your reputation, and want to make people think that blacks are equally intelligent, which they are far from that.
You forum is a fake forum, because you censor the TRUTH.
Believe what you see, if not send your white daughter to the middle of black town for a couple of weeks and have a half frican baby, while she gets herpes, aids, ebola, (all black creations) and brings it home to the rest of the family, and gues what, you cant find the father, if she even survives the rapes. Duuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhh.
What outrageous comments. Scientists should have no right to speak about what they assume are facts. Honestly, if i were a table tennis coach, i am likely to pick mostly chinese. If i were a basketball coach, its likely i will choose mostly blacks. Does this qualify me as a racist? I am not sure.
Testing the Theory that Blacks are Inferior to Others -
We should actually have the courage and freedom to put any idea to the test.
Let us start by listing all the great scientists, top chess players, business men, inventors. what percentage of these are blacks or africans?
also let us list the great sportsmen and musicians - how many blacks do you find now?
Obviously people are constructed differently.
Why should we condemn anybody who dares to say so to eternal damnation?
