Bill Clinton Flip Flopping on Iraq War?

advertisement

...Former President Bill Clinton portrayed himself as having been against the Iraq war "from the beginning" while campaigning Tuesday for his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, in Iowa.

"Even though I approved of Afghanistan and opposed Iraq from the beginning," said Clinton, "I still resent that I was not asked or given the opportunity to support those soldiers."

Clinton has long been critical of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and called it a "big mistake" as far back as November of 2005.

But like his wife, the former president supported giving President Bush the authority needed to go to war.

"I supported the President when he asked the Congress for authority to stand up against weapons of mass destruction in Iraq," said Clinton in 2003 while delivering commencement remarks at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss...

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Personally, I like Bill Clinton, but his words could be misleading.

Yet, he is technically accurate according to these words:

A spokesman for Bill Clinton tried to downplay the former president's comments by distinguishing between the authority to go to war, which both Clintons supported, and President Bush's decision to use that authority when he did.

I think he should have made the distinction clear, so as not to have his words viewed as deceptive.

Bill and Hillary Clinton don't flip flop as much as they're simply being Clintonian. The Clintonian Doctrine encompasses all positions, simultaneously. This allows them to present the correct position at the appropriate time, then revert back to prior positions as required.

The media is awed at the brilliance. It's a rare moment when the Clintons get cornered on the discrepancies. Aside from the fact that the majority working in newsrooms support Clinton endeavors, there must be a weariness over Bill's and Hillary's repetitive assertions that take multiple stands on the issues. Unless one is willing to "pile on", day after day, what professional reporter wants to cover the daily and hourly inconsistencies, calculations, backtracking, revisionisms, and lies?

Bill Clinton would do well to limit his lies to matters related to the future because his past is well-documented.
