WTF?! Pic of the Day - Racist Obama T-Shirts Sold in Georgia Bar

advertisement

Marietta bar owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring a look-a-like of cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" underneath, are not meant to offend.

Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey,

Marietta native Pam Lindley, 47, joined the protest after reading about the controversy online.

"I don't want people to think this is what Marietta is all about," she added, motioning towards the tavern. "This is what some people think the South is still like. Marietta's come a long way but I guess it's still got a little ways to go."

She said she'd like to see the city ban Norman's provocative musings regularly posted on a sign out front of the bar, which is near Marietta's downtown square. The loosely formed coalition of civil rights activists who gathered Tuesday say they will continue their campaign against Norman's "hate speech."...

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I've lived in Georgia, and I'm not surprised.

I'd hoped things had changed a bit since then, but apparently not.

Huh? F**king sick! They ban t-shirts that list the names of soldiers killed in Iraq and yet this piece of racist garbage is allowed to remain on the market????????

I'd love to take the ignoramuses who proudly wear that item of clothing and ask them if they'd like to be plunked down in New Orleans, Harlem, Detroit or any other city where the population is predominantly African-American. Something tells me they'd refuse my offer. Bastards!

Hell, I'd give him a piece of my mind. You don't have to be black to find the thing objectionable, after all. And some people claim racism in the U.S. is a dead issue these days. Think again. Oh. Wait a minute. THOSE people can't think. Lemme echo ffeineandsugar: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Take heart, folks. This sort of thing actually shines a big, bright spotlight on the worst sort of people that live in our country. Now the whole world knows who this moron is and just how much of a sociopath he is. Racism is very much alive and well in this country. Obama's campaign has taken great strides in addressing the issue, both directly and indirectly. But these sort of empty-headed cowards still lurk in the dark recesses of society. To afraid to come out into the light and defend their views, they choose to hide in bars and basements to espouse their base-less contempt for basic decency and fundamental intelligence. I'm actually glad this idiot got some spot-light on him, so I can show my children what not to embrace. Show them a literal example of the darker side of our country's history and what we must fight to the last breath to finally end. We are on our way to ending this perverse and ancient paradigm, but obviously, we still have a ways to go. Don't let this hate-monger put a strain on your emotions; that's what he wants. We shouldn't ignore it, but we have bigger fish to fry at the moment.

Aryanwear.com, eh?

Sounds scary. I'm surprised (or am I?) that the Department of Homeland Security hasn't shut the site down. Then again, its staff may be purchasing their leisure attire from those scumbuckets.

Another reason to vote for Obama - to give those (expletive deleted) apoplexy.
