Barefoot Black Caddy Photo At Golf Course 'Insulting,' Says Commissioner

advertisement

The controversial image is one of many photos decorating the Dubsdread Tap Room golf course in Orlando.

The photo shows a shoeless black caddy in the 1930s that depicts a time when black people were forced to remove their shoes before stepping on the golf course...

"There is a photograph of the history of Dubsdread but there is a black caddy with no shoes on," Commissioner Daisy Lynum said. "I find the picture insulting and I would like for someone to take it down. We don't have to change the history but we could sure change how it looks now."

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Agree with the commissioner. Sure it was history and it happened, but that doesn't mean you have to put it on display. If there was truly a change of heart, then they shouldn't want to relive such a dark past.

IMHO I think if everyone tries to forget and push down the past is when you are doomed to repeat it. It was a time period where that was accepted. We wouldn't do things like that now but being in denial and pretending it didn't exist is not the way either.
