(Pic) Shark Photographed Jumping Over Surfers

advertisement

A Central Florida photographer captured a one-in-a-million photo of a shark jumping out of the water near the heads of surfers.

Photographer Kem McNair snapped the photo of the black tip shark jumping out of the water near the surfers in the waters off New Smyrna Beach. The men were seemingly oblivious to the shark's presence....

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Maybe it's just me, but I expected to literally to see a shark jumping over the surfers heads. A dramatic photo nonetheless.

It's a horrible headline. They should have said that the shark was jumping near surfers.

I won't post the link here, but I just did an article that consists of five similar photoshopped images. They're funny. These guys DON'T suck at photoshop either, as the saying goes.

As far as the image for THIS article, I blew it up and looked at it. There are hints of possible alteration, but without higher resolution, I can't tell for sure.

If it's real, it is jumping above the surfer in the background.

Robert Blevins - AB of Seattle-

"I won't post the link here, but I just did an article that consists of five similar photoshopped images."

I'd like to see that....where can it be found?

As for this shark, since this is not unusual behavior for them when they chase fish, I don't know why anyone would bother faking it. But worth verifying....what are the hints you mention?. It does look like a Blacktip, appears to be female, well behind the second surfer............certainly no threat to the surfers.

Not that I wouldn't reflexively soil the water if I saw it jump near me.

Thanks for posting this newsguru! I find the 'men in grey suits' interesting.

I wish he would have gotten a better shot. Black-tipped sharks aren't particularly aggressive so the swimmers didn't really have anything to fear.

No. That was Richard Dreyfuss, I think.

That fish was way off in the background, and you can't even tell if it was a shark, might have been a porpoise or dolphin. Those fish often jump and play around surfers.

Porpoises and dolphins aren't fish. XD As marine mammals, they also have quite obviously different arrangements of their fins and their tail, making it clear that this is a fish, not a mammal.

Here I was hoping for a big ol' Great White. Or a tiger or nurse, at the very least. I agree, a very misleading title, and disappointing. Shouldn't be allowed, it's misrepresentation. And I agree, he ought to find a better picture for his report, as the black-tip reef sharks are hardly notorious for their man-eating tendencies.

Frankly, my dears, this looks like a Photoshop job to me. I am no Photoshop pro, but this is just too unreal looking. Now maybe if there was some video footage along with it, then I would say it's legit. Maybe we can get Tedd or one of the members of the Photog group over here to take a look, but to me the whole series of shots just looks too posed and artificial.
Will this rank with the other faked shots like the Iranian missiles?

It does look like it could be fake. My only problem is that, if it were faked, wouldn't they try to put a more impressive shark there? Or at least try and position the shark over the surfers as the title suggests? That isn't to say it's not faked, just... you'd think they'd at least go for faking an interesting photo.

It's not a photoshop job it's real. I'm a surfer who lives in South Florida. This is either a spinner shark or black tip. They chase the bait fish running near shore. They do jump out of the water chasing fish. I've seen it up close myself when surfing lots of time and I get out of the water fast.

New Smyrna Beach is the shark bite capital of the world. These sharks bite feet and hands all the time up there.
