Obama Thanks McCain For Effort to Remind Supporters to be Respectful

advertisement

"I appreciated his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama told supporters in Philadelphia. He said McCain "has served this country with honor, and he deserves our thanks for that."

At a town-hall event Friday in Minnesota, McCain took the microphone from a woman who had called Obama an Arab. McCain said, "No, ma'am," and he called Obama "a decent, family man."

McCain drew boos at the same event when he told a supporter who expressed fear at the prospect of Obama's election that the Democrat is a "person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."....

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

If McCain stops the 'fear-smear-hate' campaign set in motion by the old Lee Atwater, Nixon, Karl Rove family of campaign management tactics- Then - we may be able to begin some form of racial healing... that would be a blessing...

McCain is campaigning. He is aware that his 'scare' tactics' don't scare many and they just see that he is a hateful person to pursue the hateful attacks started by his running mate the crazy parrot Palin. He sees that there are even Republican people that say enough isenough from his antics. This was a pitiful way to say he was sorry for starting this racist crap that most Americans that support him were hiding. Now with him saying that Obama is a 'decent man', HE is trying to be a decent man. It's too little too late for me.

I'm not buying it. This is not a "too little, too late" type of thing. This sort of thing has been going on since last year when one of his supporters asked him that famous question, "How do we stop the @!$%#" at one of his very early "hometown feel-good" rallies.

McCain did nothing to dissuade that sort of comment from a supporter and left the gate open long enough for hundreds of thousands of bigots of every stripe and creed to slip through and attach themselves like a canker.

His continued acceptance of this crowd at his rallies without saying one word to disperse them and try to get them to un-attach themselves is further proof he either did not care, or he shares their views.

I am Jeremiah Johnson and I know bigots are everywhere, in every campaign, including Obama's Campaign, but I never thought I would be writing against John McCain, who, as a retired military man with a family history of protecting the ideal of The Constitution of the United States, should be setting the example for national equality.

I think that anyone who thinks that Obama's a terrorist, or a Muslim may not know the meaning of the word 'respectful' as it has more then two syllables.

Do you suppose that McCain is afraid of being charged if/when one of these losers makes an attempt at violence?

McCain let the hateful rhetoric ride for a while and he is going to have a very hard time trying to calm the crowds down now to behaving like human beings again.  Both he and Palin should have stopped those comments the moment they started.  Now it's like a locomotive running at full steam.

Hah, great back-handed compliment by Obama... when your enemy is angered, they make mistakes and can be provoked.

This came from an e-mail I received today that is going around the internet. Cannot watch because he just gags me. All tv's have FOX deleted.

I deleted FOX news from my satellite channels about two years ago, I just couldn't take their lies any more.

When I watched the video of McCain's face when the woman said "A"rab I saw the real John McCain once again. The same guy I liked on the Daily Show, the one that was respectful and earnest.

Senator McCain let his campaign staff drum up an agenda to compete in an election. The problem is, the plan is not about John McCain, it's about demonizing the opponent.

He set aside his own values and adopted what they told him. We don't hear rational talk about immigration reform from Senator McCain anymore. We don't hear those "Maverick" ideals, we hear what the campaign staff, who thinks to win, they need to incite a conservative base into action.

The problem with this, is that real John McCain is not part of the core conservative group. Senator McCain is stuck pandering to a radical core of ideological isolationists that would rather step on civil rights than be civil.

The real John McCain is better than that.
John McCain simply stopped being commander and chief of his own campaign.

I saw the same thing, it was all over his face that he doesn't agree with what his advisors are making him do.  Now the trick is making his case to reverse the damage to his image.

John McCain has lost his way. What's really sad about all this is that his campaign took on the cloak of the ultra-right-wingers whose mantra is to attack the opponent and never discuss the issues. I see it everywhere I go.

This means they really do not have a plan nor even an idea on how to get a clue to solve the problems facing us today without resorting to tactics of "My Way or the Highway" and that is sad as well coming from a man that says he reaches across the aisle.

I am Jeremiah Johnson and I believe we have finally seen the true John McCain in his element and sadly that seems to be proof of a continuance of the past policies of the "Yer either with me or against us" Bushism/Rove politicking of the last eight years.

I actually saw the old McCain last night when he took the mic away from the backward thinking ,low-information idgit that stated she was afraid because Obama was "Arab".

For a moment, McCain dropped the self-righteous crap and acted like the once dignified man he used to be. Bravo, John!

I have to say though, you reap what you sow. This whole week McCain and Plain have been drilling below the surface - tapping into feelings amongst their supporters of racism and xenophobia.

Sorry. I'm not buying it. This has been going on for quite some time now and he could have put a stop to it at any time right up to several weeks ago.

"Meet the New Boss. Same as the Old Boss" "Won't get fooled again"

"We have a saying down in Texas. maybe they have one here at NewsVine ... Fool me once... shame on you. Fool me twice ... can't get fooled again"

I am Jeremiah Johnson and I can see right through this subterfuge from the Arizona Senator.

My vote is for John McCain and Sarah Palin to sit with David Letterman and call Obama a terrorist- then do a quick round of talk shows and claim Obama as a terrorist- start with "Ellen", then "The View" and move on to "ABC News" w/Charlie Gibson- tell America, John and Sarah from the prime and day time talk news shows about Barack Obama's terror threat...

ha ha ha-canned laughter- like sunshine in a box- ha ha ha

Cindy McCain on the cover of "Vogue" witha shotgun and confederate flag??? John McCain's daughter selling childrens books on Oprah? Barbra Walters and Ellen Degeneres screaming commie and "reform this Obama" from their shows? Hell Yeah-

As a matter of fact I think John McCain could raise the terror alert a bit higher- just a notch-

I think that mccain saw the writing on the wall... Envolking the racism issue was like trying to raise Frankenstein...it is an uncontrollable monster that can not be controlled and mccain saw that his monster was getting out of hand, to a point that it  could turn on palin/mccain.  Much like what mccain saw with the crowd booing mccain when he tried to be the voice of reason... talk about life imitating art...

Besides mccain's poll numbers do not suppor this effort......

Now that John Lewis has called out McCain on the racist rhetoric, the McCain campaign is demanding that Obama repudiate Lewis's comments. See the CNN Ticker.
